The Walls Are Going Up

Progress!  Progress!  Progress!  The walls of the Sleep Inn are going up. You can see a foot print of the rooms. I hope to add some digital pictures soon so we can all monitor the progress together. This is very exciting. We have been talking about these hotels for over a year now. To actually see construction start is wonderful. For those of you that have built a home, this is the same kind of excitement on a larger scale.

I apologize for the sparse entries lately. Now construction has actually started I will keep you more informed.

It Really Happened.....

Quality Inn closed on March 1, 2006. We checked our last guest out around 10:30 am that morning. It was a strange experience to know that you were checking out the last guest out who would ever be a guest at a hotel that has been in business for 20 years. Thousands and thousands of people have stayed at the hotel.....to know we were closing the chapter on 20 years of business with that last check out was surreal. We followed the same procedure as always with one exception, we had to leave off our ending tag line.....please stay with us anytime you are in town. The local newspaper was there to take pictures and wrote a lovely article which is probably still on line at www.wataugademocrat.com. Once our last guest was gone we were faced with the daunting tasks of packing up a 134 room hotel. I will spare you the details, but let me just say it was a huge project. So now it is done and over. The signs are down, the parking lot and rooms are empty but only for a little while. Once August rolls around there will be a building full of girls living the high life in "Sorority Hall".

There is progress on the new hotels. I actually walked the property with the owner last weekend. The slab on the Sleep Inn was poured this week. It is still on tap to open in the fall. The La Quinta will open in the Winter. I had only driven by the site and did not realize how nice the view is. From one particular angle you have the view of a white church steeple against the backdrop of a beautiful mountain.

Change is sometimes hard, but good. I normally don't look forward to the end of summer. This year will be the exception.

Below The Surface

For those of you that have read this blog you know that this is a blog about the closing of a hotel and the opening of three new ones. The original thought was and still is that the blog would be the best way to keep customers updated on the progress of the new hotels and the projected opening dates.  So on the surface this appears to be a logical way to stay connected to the people we serve.....our customers. The news is still pretty much the same as reported in earlier entries. The Country Inn and Suites will open Spring of 2006 and The Sleep Inn and The La Quinta Inn and Suites will open in Fall of 2006. Although the thought of the new hotels is very exciting, the fact is that for me and my staff we are preparing to say good bye to what has become a very important part of our lives.

As I said, on the surface this is the most logical way to stay connected to our customers.  The thing is that in trying to think of interesting and new information to enter in the blog I have had to look below the surface. On the surface I smile, keep my shoulder square and my head high. I reassure staff and customers alike that although we are sad to close the hotel that this was a business decision in the best interest of everyone. In my head I truly believe that, but in my heart I have many mixed emotions. Operating a hotel is much like taking care of your home and your family. You provide  a good breakfast, you offer  a comfortable and clean bedroom, you wash their linen, you clean around their personal belongings, you  give advice about where to go and what to do, and so in many ways the cusotmers have become your extended family. There are customers who stay with us several times a month when they are in town on business. You look forward to seeing them because somewhere in between the business of checking them in and out you have come to know them and they have come to know you. You know their spouse's name and the names of their children. You asked if everyone is doing well and they in turn want to know about your family. You share stories and concerns and the bond grows closer. Then there are the customers that you only see once or twice a year when they come to town  for a few days, but you remember them and they remember you. There are the parents who stay while they get their child settled at the University. Then there are the grown children who stay while they settle the affairs of their parents. Some are here because of broken bones and some because of broken hearts. Others come just to get away from it all. They all have a story and along the way we hear bits and pieces.

So on the surface it all seems pretty black and white. The nice thing is the staff at this hotel looks below the surface. That is why this is not just about the closing of a hotel. It is about change. It is about disconnecting with those you have taken care of....at least for a little while.

Happy New Year

The thought of a new year and the chance to start over is always exciting. Of course there are the yearly resolutions....save money, eat healthier, spend more time with the kids, spend more time with my parent's who are elderly, and the list goes on and on and on. Like everyone else I start out with great expectations but somehow as time goes other priorities slip in. I think my true resolution for this year is not to make any resolutions. I plan to take things one day at a time. Life has a way of throwing you a few curve balls from time to time and I want to be ready for whatever comes my way.

Now that we are actually in 2006 the thought of closing this hotel and opening the two new ones is becoming more of a reality. I look forward to the challenges of 2006 and will fondly remember 2005.  The older I get the faster time goes by. It has been almost a year now since the owner told me that this hotel was being sold. It seems like it was just yesterday. That was a very sad day for me. This has been more than just a job. I love what I do and I make every effort to be the best I can be.

This year will be a year of endings and a year of beginnings. As one door closes another will open and we will step into a new adventure. Please check back from time to time to keep updated on the progress of the new hotels.

Just Like Family

There is a brisk chill in the mountain air today. It is hard to believe that we are entering our last holiday season here at Quality Inn. The trees are  up, the decorations carefully placed, wreath's adorn the inside and outside of the building, and beautiful poinsettia's grace the lobby. Our staff have been busy little elves. They always take so much care as they decorate. This place is really just an extension of our own homes. We spend much more time here with our fellow employees and customers than we do with our families. I guess that is why treat our each other and our customers..."just like family."

Next year at this time we will be in a new home. Actually there will be two new homes. I found out today that the Sleep Inn should be open about 30 days before the La Quinta Inn and Suites. The target date for the Sleep Inn is September 1, 2006. September should be a great month to open a hotel. It is usually busy...but not to busy. Since Boone is home to Appalachian State University (ASU) many of the September visitors are parents trying to get students situated. By the way congrats and good luck to ASU as they are in the play offs this weekend.

Remember tis the season....you only have 22 shopping days before Christmas.

A Mountain Thanksgiving

It really is starting to feel like the holidays here in the western mountains of North Carolina. We awoke this morning to a beautiful white blanket of snow. The slopes are buzzing with the excitement of the first real snow. We are busy decorating for Christmas. It is always so much fun to watch the staff scurry around like Santa's little helpers as they carefully place each decoration. Although Christmas seems to be the star of the holiday season, I think it is important to remember to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives.

Best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration from all of the staff of Quality Inn Appalachian Conference Center.

Family Tradition

Each year many families make the trip to the Western Mountains of North Carolina to pick out the perfect tree for Christmas. Many families have made it a tradition for years now to stay with us and take advantage of our “Christmas Tree Package”. The package includes one night lodging, your choice of a tree up to seven feet, a hayride and hot beverages. Not only do you get to choose your tree, you also get to cut the tree. This makes for a true mountain experience reminiscent of years gone by. As a child I can remember hiking up in the mountains above our home to "choose and cut" the perfect tree. I would have to say that unlike the guests who enjoy our tree package, my brother and I did not leave the mountain with a baled tree. By the time we dragged the tree down the mountain we often ended up with a few missing branches. We had several Charlie Brown Christmases thanks to those ragged trees.

Our guests love the convenience of paying for everything here at the hotel.  Each year we see familiar faces as more and more families make this a tradition. With the closing of this hotel we are hoping our families will follow us to our new hotels and start a new tradition. This is just one thing more in a long line of "lasts" for us......

We would love for you and your family to start a mountain tradition with us. We still have packages available. You will be making memories that will last for a lifetime.
